They empower employees, community members and initiatives across their service territory through volunteerism and investments in organizations that support education, sustainability and wellbeing.OverviewThe Substation Engineering department is responsible for overseeing the design and implementation of substation construction projects and for supporting the resolution of non-routine technical and operational reliability issues. Engineers in this department routinely work with third party engineering firms and internal field technicians to improve or expand the reliability and capability of the regional power delivery system at the interface between power transmission and power distribution.

The position will be filled at the appropriate level depending on the candidates experience level: Engineer I, II, III or Principal.

The position can be located in Louisville or Lexington, KY based on the candidate's preference.

Responsibilities

  • Assists in the work on smaller engineering projects or well-defined areas of larger Uses existing procedures to investigate, evaluate and assist in producing technically correct and cost-effective designs or recommendations that solve ongoing problems.
  • Builds relationships that will facilitate knowledge transfer, cross functional knowledge of related work groups, and ability to present work products
  • Works under supervision in the field and/or home office in a variety of functions and challenging but structured work that develops competencies in the function/discipline.
  • Gathers and correlates basic engineering data using well defined engineering procedures, which may include routine and diagnostic testing of components and systems, and engineering
  • Continually expands and improves technical and business skill set under own initiative with instruction, guidance, and direction from
  • Assists in a variety of topics including developing innovative procedures, improved design recommendations or new or better equipment purchase
  • All positions in which driving is an essential function of the job, regardless if the job code is marked safety sensitive or not, will also be included as safety sensitive
  • May be assigned an Electric Utilities emergency and storm role. This is a special assignment that comes into play during storms and other emergencies when the company needs to restore power or respond to other issues affecting customer service. This role may necessitate the need to work after-hours, outside of your normal schedule.

In the case of remote work, physical presence in the office/on-site may be required to engage in face-to-face interaction and coordination of work among direct reports and co-workers.
  • Substation design in areas including but not limited to site, civil, geotechnical, general arrangement, foundation and equipment, elevations and sections, grounding design, conduit and cable design, bills of materials, protection & control systems, AC and DC distribution systems, material specifications, environmental regulations, and safety.
  • Develop schedules, engineering drawings, bid specifications and contract awards, field support during construction, and project documentation for new installations and upgrades.
  • Provide dedicated project and technical support to address processes to comply with NERC Standards unique to the company’s transmission protection and substations organization.

Qualifications

Required Education

ABET Accredited Bachelor's degree in Engineering or engineering technology is required.
