Job description

The Division of Engineering Services (DES), Structures and Engineering Services (SES), Office of Electrical, Mechanical, Water and Wastewater (OEMWW), is recruiting to fill a Mechanical Engineer, position located in Sacramento.

This is the entry, first working, and journey level of professional engineering work. This position exists within the Office of Electrical, Mechanical, Water & Wastewater Engineering (OEMWW). Under direction of the branch chief; a Senior Mechanical Engineer (Supervisor), the incumbent performs a wide variety of mechanical engineering design, specification preparation, estimating, and inspection work involved in the design, construction, and maintenance of Department facilities and systems. Facilities include: storm water drainage pumping plants, sewage lift stations, vehicular tunnels, movable bridges, safety roadside rest areas, highway maintenance stations, equipment repair shops, toll plazas, truck weigh and inspection facilities, office buildings, warehouse buildings, vehicle/equipment storage buildings, fueling facilities (gas, diesel, CNG) at maintenance stations, and other transportation-related facilities.

Working Conditions

Multiple positions may be filled from this recruitment.

This position may be eligible for telework. The amount of telework is at the discretion of the Department and based on Caltrans’s evolving telework policy. Caltrans supports telework, recognizing that in-person attendance may be required based on operational needs. Employees are expected to be able to report to their worksites with minimum notification if an urgent need arises. The selected candidate will be required to commute to the headquartered location as needed to meet operational needs. Business travel may be required, and reimbursement considers an employee’s designated headquartered location, primary residence, and may be subject to CalHR regulations or applicable bargaining unit contract provisions. All commute expenses to the headquartered location will be the responsibility of the selected candidate.

New to State candidates will be hired into the minimum salary of the classification or minimum of alternate range when applicable.

  • Possession of a valid driver’s license is required when operating a state owned or leased vehicle.
  • Must have and maintain a valid California Driver License
  • Statement of Qualification (SOQ) is required.

Statement of Qualifications (SOQ) required. The SOQ serves as documentation of each candidate’s ability to present information clearly and concisely in writing. SOQ must be typed and NO MORE than 1 PAGE, single-spaced, using 12-point font. SOQ must include your name, date, and position title. SOQ must include Mechanical Engineering degree info, Mechanical PE licensing info, and EIT or FE certificate info. Resumes do not take the place of the SOQ.

The SOQs must demonstrate your:

• Describe your ability to prepare plans, specifications, and estimates for mechanical systems. Please provide a specific example.

• Describe your ability to design, provide construction support, inspections, and troubleshooting of mechanical systems related to office buildings, mechanic's facilities, scale facilities, lab buildings, storage buildings, warehouse buildings, pump plants, movable bridges, tunnels, vehicle fueling facilities, compressed air systems, natural gas systems, hydronic systems, and other transportation facilities and systems. Please provide a specific example.

• Knowledge of applicable codes, guides, standards, safety orders, and regulatory agencies associated with the design, construction, and inspection of mechanical systems at transportation facilities. Please provide a specific example.

• Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing.

• Ability to work well and collaborate with others. Please provide a specific example.
