Job description

HJF is seeking a Mechanical Engineer I to perform engineering duties in planning and designing tools, engines, machines and other mechanically functioning equipment. This job will oversee the installation, operation, maintenance and repair of equipment along with the supervision of operations and auxiliary equipment in laboratory and field research studies.

This position will be in support of the Extremity Trauma and Amputation Center of Excellence, Military Performance Laboratory (MPL), Department of Rehabilitation Medicine located at the Center for the Intrepid (CFI)/Brooke Army Medical Center (BAMC) in Fort Sam Houston, Texas. The aim of the CFI is to provide state-of-the-art care for wounded service members as they return to the highest levels of physical, psychological and emotional function. The MPL provides injured military members with the best technology available to precisely analyze and interpret movement dysfunctions. Personnel from the MPL provide clinical gait analysis services, conduct research to improve patient management, and provide education and training in leading-edge care and rehabilitation. This is a full-time position in direct support of research and development projects involving assessment and training of individuals who have experienced limb trauma.

Responsibilities
  • Research and analyze data, such as customer design proposal, specifications and manuals to determine feasibility of design or application.
  • Develop methods and procedures for evaluating, testing and investigating products or systems.
  • Design products or systems applying knowledge of engineering principles. Oversee fabrication and installation of prototypes, test control apparatus and equipment ensuring conformance with engineering design and customer specifications. May include data systems (data acquisition, instrumentation, data management and data analysis) according to approved protocols, policies and/or plans to ensure quality, accuracy and reproducibility of data/results. May also include the development of equipment performance databases.
  • Provides engineering and analytical services related to data acquisition, instrumentation, data management, and data analysis according to approved protocols, policies, and/or plans to ensure quality, accuracy and reproducibility of data/results.
  • Develop or aide in the development of test plans, technical reports and scientific publications/presentations.
  • May perform other duties and responsibilities as assigned or directed by the supervisor. This may include attendance of and participation in required training for role.
Qualifications

Education and Experience

  • Bachelor's Degree in Mechanical Engineering.
  • Minimum of 0-2 years experience required.

Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Knowledge of human anatomy and physiology and destructive and non-destructive failure analysis.
  • Knowledge of mechanical design of prosthetic and orthotic devices.
  • Knowledge of Finite Element modelling models, techniques and tools.
  • Knowledge of turning and milling type machine shop services.
  • Experience with material testing machines
  • Experience with 3d printing.
  • Problem-solving skills.
  • Written and oral communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with key stakeholders including research staff.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a T1/Public Trust background check.  

Physical Capabilities

  • Lifting: Requires lifting materials up to 25 lbs.
  • Ability to stand or sit at a computer for prolonged periods.
  • Ability to climb, pull, and lift heavy objects.
  • Operating motor vehicles, machinery, and/or power tools.

Work Environment

  • This position will take place primarily in a laboratory setting.

Compensation

  • The annual salary range for this position is $57,650-$87,000. Actual salary will be determined based on experience, education, etc.
