About Me

Hi! My name is Linda Cheung and I am an incoming sophomore at Stony Brook University majoring in English on the pre-law track. At my core, I am a storyteller. I began journalism to improve my writing, but over time, it became a way to learn more about the world we live in and use my words for positive change. With journalism being one of many vital pillars of democracy, I became interested in government and politics. My campaign experience launched me directly into conversations with voters, and I learned how incredibly interwoven our systems of government are into the lives of everyday people. If journalism helps me highlight injustice, then law is how I hope to solve it. My passion for classical violin reflects the same love for stories. From George Gershwin to Leonard Bernstein, American classical music’s jazz, blues, and bluegrass influences reflect the wealth of diversity this country contains, how far we have come, and how much we have yet to achieve. Classical music is deeply intertwined with world history, government, and politics, and continuously guides my thinking in creating a more just and equitable society for all. Playing these works reminds me that music, like policy, is shaped by the people it serves— and both can be forces for positive change. My journey in politics is rooted in a deep belief that meaningful connection— especially with voters— starts by listening. From translating for Chinese-speaking voters to researching linguistic diversity, I’ve learned that access to language is access to power. This fall I will be studying abroad in Florence, Italy to deepen my understanding of human rights and global storytelling through journalism. Following my undergraduate journey, I hope to attend law school and help solve society’s most pressing inequalities surrounding linguistic injustice. To me, what constitutes a life fulfilled is a life dedicated to the uplifting of marginalized communities and creating a more equitable society for all. I am always seeking opportunities to grow as a writer, scholar, and advocate. Let’s connect: linda.s.cheung@stonybrook.edu
